Our aim at Barefoot is to design maternity fashions that make you feel fabulous during your pregnancy. We focus on creating versatile designs that are simple but a little bit funky, that will be comfortable for wear to full term, and that look like designer maternity without the designer pricetag.

Maternity fashions have changed considerably over the years. Stretch fabrics have certainly revolutionised fashion styles. I remember some of my mums maternity dresses, made from wool and cotton. The fabrics had no stretch so maternity designers had to make much greater allowance for the changing pregnancy form....aka the maternity tent fashions!

On the topic of fabrics, look out for maternity fashions made from organic fabrics. Maternity clothes made from certified organic fabrics are popular with the eco conscience and those suffering skin conditions such as eczema. Certified organic fabrics are made from fibres such cotton, wool and bamboo that have been grown and produced without the use of chemicals, so they are good for you and good for the environment. As a general rule, maternity fashions made from natural fabrics are more comfortable to wear because these fabrics breathe, have good absorbancy and natural odour resistance.

We have recently an organic maternity fashions and breastfeeding range and are using two different types of certified organic fabric:

Certified Organic Cotton Eco Dyed ?A fabric that is manufactured and eco dyed in Australia from imported certified organic cotton fibre. This fabric is used mostly in our breastfeeding fashions but also in some of our maternity tops and skirts.

Certified Organic Fair Trade Colour Grown Cotton ?This fabric has an amazing story and is quite unique. We are the only maternity fashion label in Australia to use this luxurious and special fabric. The cotton plant grows in the actual colour you see in the fabric. No dyes are used at all giving the fabric a beautiful soft feel. We are using this fabric in some of our funky maternity fashions such as our curlottes, and maternity tees. Our natural coloured breastfeeding tops are made using this fabric. If you or your baby have sensitive skin, these garments may be a good option for you.
