Barefoot Maternity & Nursing Wear was established in 2004 by Newcastle based designer, Sarah McKensey. The idea for the business came about after hearing pregnant friends complain about the challenges of finding fashionable maternity clothes that were also comfortable and reasonably priced.

After researching what maternity wear was already on the market, it became clear that there was a need for stylish but practical garments that could be worn by pregnant women of varying shapes and sizes. There was a need for larger sized maternity clothes to fit plus size ladies, breastfeeding tops that catered for big busts and longer length maternity pants and maternity jeans for tall women.

The need for clothes that could be worn throughout pregnancy to full term and again after giving birth, also became apparent. As a new mother, clothing that fits your post partum tummy but doesn’t make you look pregnant again, and clothing that you can easily breastfeed your baby in are really important.

Having experienced three pregnancies myself, two during winter and one through summer, I found regardless of season my body temperature was running hotter than usual. Maternity garments made from synthetic fabrics me uncomfortably warm, sweaty and smelly. Because of this it was an easy choice to manufacture the Barefoot range using natural and organic fabrics. Natural fabrics are soft on your skin, allow your body to breathe and absorb perspiration readily, making them comfortable to wear. Even better are organic fabrics, which have been produced without the use of commercial pesticides and herbicides.

I also found during my pregnancy my favorite clothes (and the most useful!) were the ones that I could dress up or down – long skirts, teamed with a smart top and accessories for a night out, or simple cross over tee for a casual look, a pair of straight leg pants in black for the office and a knee length a-line skirt for the weekends.

Armed with all of this information, I set about designing a range of top quality, natural and organic maternity wear with an affordable price tag for the ‘no fuss’ girl. Clothing that’s simple but stylish, practical, versatile, made to last and suit mums of all shapes and sizes.
